Researchers are experimenting with a new way to edit genes. While CRISPR can be thought of as a way to cut and edit out genes, in prime [editing](https://www.discovermagazine.com/health/will-prime-editors-be-the-new-crispr), genes are searched for and replaced without slicing—which lowers the risk of changing the genetic code. “If CRISPR is like scissors … then you can think of prime editors like word processors,” said chemist David Liu.
