Applying Gene Editing in HIV

Scientists at Peking University in Beijing are investigating the use of CRISPR gene editing technology to developing treatments for HIV. In a first study, human stem cells engineered to mimic a rare form of natural immunity to the AIDS virus were transplanted into a patient with HIV and blood cancer. The study demonstrated that cells modified using CRISPR gene-editing technology can survive for an extended period of time in the human body and many researchers are hopeful that CRISPR technology will ultimately be used to develop treatments for many different blood disorders.
